GEAR

1948 Martin 0-18

This has been the road guitar for about a year and half. It’s tiny, and one year older than my Dad, with a sunnier disposition. Purchased at The Music Emporium in Lexington, MA.

1950’s Penncrest (Kay) Banjo
Banjo legend Danny Barnes spent most of one morning trying to show me the fundaments of real deal banjo picking, and it was like he was teaching card-tricks to dog. Still and all, I like to fool around with it. Ebay.

1971 Martin D-18

I recorded my whole first album on this guitar, tuned down a half step. The kind gift of an old friend who went off to Siberia to inspect warheads for the Government, and left it behind for me when she knew I was broke. It’s the first real guitar I ever got to play, and I put some heavy mileage on it.

1968 Fender Princeton Reverb Amp
This is my wife’s amp, and it’s real cool. I am allowed to play it.

1966 Harmony Rocket and 1961 Gibson Skylark Amplifier
The Red Rocket can only tell the truth. I got this one without the pick guard, cleaned it up and had the guys at Lucchesi Vintage instruments in Easthampton, MA work it over and make the new pick guard for me. I bought the Skylark at Blue Note Guitars in Northampton, MA. I love this guitar.

1969 Royal Custom III
This typewriter accompanied my mother to College in Missouri. I’ve written a lot of letters, songs, and poems on it.

2005 Esteve classical
This was a birthday gift from my wife, and it’s a wonderful little Spanish guitar, almost always out of the case.

1950’s vintage Kay Archtop
I recorded the song ‘Train to Jackson’ on this guitar, another eBay special. It has that big dry nasal sound, almost a built in reverb, perfect for flat-picking tunes. My friend Mark Olson continues to e-mail me eBay guitars he knows I am too weak to resist buying.

The Lazy Ike

I’ve never actually caught anything on this lure, but I have a good feeling about it. Also, I like how it swims.

Vintage Silvertone Ukulele
This also belongs to my wife.

All of my instruments are confidently entrusted to the care of a man named Yukon,
who works at The Music Emporium, in Lexington, MA.
